Originating from China, the longan is a small, round fruit that grows in clusters on evergreen trees that can reach impressive heights of 9 to 20 meters. The name “longan” is derived from the Chinese words meaning “dragon eyes”, which refers to the appearance of the fruit pit. When ripe, the fruit has a thin skin, making it easier to peel.

Longan is a popular fruit across Southeast Asia, and it is often used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments. In fact, in traditional Chinese medicine, longan is believed to have a calming effect on the nervous system, promote relaxation, and enhance sleep quality.

Health benefits longan

Helps with healthy digestion

Longan is a fruit that is very high in fiber. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that is essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system. The high fiber content in longan supports good bowel movements by adding bulk and softness to the stool, which helps to prevent constipation.

Fiber also helps improve gut bacteria, which is important for keeping your digestive system healthy. The good bacteria in your gut help to break down food and absorb nutrients. Fiber can also reduce or prevent diarrhea, upset stomach, cramps, and bloating.

Beneficial for the skin

Longan fruit is packed with nutrients beneficial for the skin. In addition to vitamin C, longan also contains other antioxidants such as polyphenols and flavonoids that help protect the skin from harmful free radicals.

Moreover, longan is also a good source of minerals such as iron, magnesium, and potassium, which are essential for skin health. Iron is required for the production of hemoglobin, a protein that delivers oxygen to the skin cells, while magnesium helps regulate the skin’s moisture levels. Potassium, on the other hand, helps maintain the skin’s pH balance and hydration.

Can help regulate blood pressure

Longan’s health benefits are not limited to its sweet taste. In fact, the fruit is rich in potassium, a mineral that plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy blood pressure.

Potassium works by relaxing the walls of blood vessels, which in turn helps to optimize blood flow and reduce the risk of developing hypertension.

Boosts immune system

The exotic fruit longan is rich in nutrients. In addition to vitamin C, it is also a good source of vitamin B-complex and minerals such as potassium, magnesium and phosphorus.

Vitamin C, in particular, is a key nutrient for maintaining strong immunity. It acts as an antioxidant that can protect your body from free radicals that cause cellular damage.  A strong immune system can help prevent and reduce the risk of common colds and flu. In addition, it can also help your body fight off infections and diseases.

Helps fight skin aging

Among the many benefits of consuming longan, one of the most notable is its ability to help counteract the reduction of wrinkles, age spots, blemishes and the appearance of scars.

This is due to the fact that the pulp of the fruit contains a variety of important nutrients, including vitamin B, vitamin C and antioxidants. These nutrients have been shown to be particularly effective at combating the signs of aging, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including sun exposure and environmental pollutants.
